Recycles - Do you recycle paper, plastic, glass, cardboard, tin and aluminum ... and do you bring materials such as compact fluorescent lighting, electronics, batteries, cell phones, paint and household hazardous waste to authorized hazardous waste facilities?
I'm a crazy about recycling but I am working really hard on the "reduce" portion of the "reduce, reuse, recycle" equation so that there is less to recycle. I've been known to pull cans and bottles out of public trash bins and take them home to recycle. I'm also lucky enough to have a friend who works for a company that recycles electronics, shoes and batteries so it is really easy for me to dispose of those items properly as well.
Do you compost your food and food related paper waste?
Lighting - Do you use compact fluorescent light bulbs, LEDs or Energy Star rated lights in at least 75% of your light fixtures?
Along with using compact fluorescent light bulbs, I've removed a light bulb or two from fixtures that use two or three bulbs. I find that in spaces not requiring a lot of light, like hallways, you can get away with less.
Thermostat - Do you use a programmable thermostat and maintain energy efficient temperatures of 68F degrees maximum in the winter & 80F degrees minimum in the summer?
I grew up in an old drafty house with the thermostat set at 67 in the winter. I learned early on that it is just as easy to put on another pair of socks as it is to bump up the thermostat another degree.
Hibernate Computers - Do you set your computer monitor(s) to hibernate after 5 minutes and your hard drives to shut down after 30 minutes without use? (National authority on this recommendation: U.S. Energy Star)
I am a web developer so I have a lot of equipment on all of the time. I set my computer to automatically go to sleep or shut down so I don't have to try and remember.
Green Energy - Do you use alternate energy sources in the home such as, solar electricity, wind power and/or a geo-thermal temperature regulation?
Someday when I own my own home, I will look for ways to implement alternate energy sources.
Conserves Water - Have you installed aerator faucets and do you maintain plumbing fixtures to prevent leaks, drips and running water in toilets throughout the home?
Unwanted Mail - Do you remove your name from junk mail lists, cancel all unnecessary catalogs, eliminate the delivery of unused phone books and continue to ensure your name stays off the junk mail lists?
Paper - Do you purchase and/or use post-consumer recycled paper products whenever possible?
My favorite recycled waste product comes from Cass Community Social Services in Detroit. They make really cool mud mats out of old tires they collect from their community. Their mud mat facility gets old tires off of the street and provides employment opportunities and training for homeless men and women in the community. Another win, win!
Reusable Bags - Do you use reusable bags when shopping to avoid unnecessary plastic bag and paper bag production and waste?
I have a bunch of bags I've collected over the years from various events that I use. I've also been known to steal the paper bags from Whole Foods that my downstairs neighbor puts in her recycling bin instead of reusing them.
Transportation - Do you use public transit, carpool, drive a hybrid and/or use non-motorized transportation?
I split my time between Milwaukee and Chicago and find myself utilizing public transportation and riding my bike more often in Chicago because it is so convenient. When in Milwaukee, I try to do my shopping in my neighborhood and at farmers markets I can walk to.
Bottled Water - Do you avoid purchasing plastic bottled water?
I can't remember the last time I drank out of or purchased a PET plastic bottle. I am a big fan of Klean Kanteen and when I'm working outside and need to not be drinking out of a hot metal bottle, I use an insulated Camelbak bottle.
Green Favorites - Do you purchase organic, natural, sustainable & renewable products (saying yes means that at least 20% of your consumables fall under these categories)?
I started practicing Meatless Mondays a couple of years ago and have since become a vegetarian. I work to purchase a majority of my food locally and support my local food co-op.
I purchase Lakefront Brewery products because they understand the impacts of business on the environment and I am a big fan of their Organic ESB.
I purchase most of my cosmetics from Lush. Not only are their products handmade with fresh ingredients, but they allow you to return the packaging to the store to be reused in exchange for free products. It is a win, win!
Inspires Others - Whenever possible, do you look to support environmentally responsible businesses? If you don't know if the companies and businesses that you are supporting are 'greening' their operations, consider asking them to create an Eco-Profile so that you and other consumers can see what they do environmentally.
Energy Audit - Have you had an energy audit within the past 24 months to help ensure maximum efficiency in energy usage throughout our home?
Giving - Do you donate and/or volunteer to help society and/or the environment?
I volunteer with Rock the Green and I work at a church teaching young people about their impact on the environment and how that relates to their impact on people we are called to care for all around the world.
