Recycles - Do you recycle paper, plastic, glass, cardboard, tin and aluminum ... and do you bring materials such as compact fluorescent lighting, electronics, batteries, cell phones, paint and household hazardous waste to authorized hazardous waste facilities?
I recycle all standard recyclables I use in my house. When out and about I don't always go out of my way to make sure things are recycled and in Florida the standards are low; outside the home it is hard to find a separate recycling container. I forget about recycling batteries, unfortunately.
Do you compost your food and food related paper waste?
Lighting - Do you use compact fluorescent light bulbs, LEDs or Energy Star rated lights in at least 75% of your light fixtures?
We use a few, it's not something I have thought about lately or been reminded of lately.
Thermostat - Do you use a programmable thermostat and maintain energy efficient temperatures of 68F degrees maximum in the winter & 80F degrees minimum in the summer?
I live in South Florida and I keep our thermostat at a relatively high temperature compared to most homes. I have a ceiling fan in every room and I keep those on high. This is one thing I do think about and am very strict about.
Hibernate Computers - Do you set your computer monitor(s) to hibernate after 5 minutes and your hard drives to shut down after 30 minutes without use? (National authority on this recommendation: U.S. Energy Star)
Green Energy - Do you use alternate energy sources in the home such as, solar electricity, wind power and/or a geo-thermal temperature regulation?
Conserves Water - Have you installed aerator faucets and do you maintain plumbing fixtures to prevent leaks, drips and running water in toilets throughout the home?
We also use grey water for our lawn and collect rainwater.
Unwanted Mail - Do you remove your name from junk mail lists, cancel all unnecessary catalogs, eliminate the delivery of unused phone books and continue to ensure your name stays off the junk mail lists?
I do some of this but haven't thought of it as green. That motivates me to be more vigilant. I have a little bit of a magazine habit, but I either recycle or donate to local shelters and clinics.
Paper - Do you purchase and/or use post-consumer recycled paper products whenever possible?
I will when it's an option, but I also consider price and personal taste when I make buying decisions, so I have to say no, not whenever possible. But I do prefer it.
Reusable Bags - Do you use reusable bags when shopping to avoid unnecessary plastic bag and paper bag production and waste?
Transportation - Do you use public transit, carpool, drive a hybrid and/or use non-motorized transportation?
Where I live now the transit system is not very good, and it is not bicycle friendly. I carpool whenever possible but do not drive a hybrid.
Bottled Water - Do you avoid purchasing plastic bottled water?
They are not allowed in my home, if one sneaks in it is always recycled.
Green Favorites - Do you purchase organic, natural, sustainable & renewable products (saying yes means that at least 20% of your consumables fall under these categories)?
I like the idea of this but couldn't tell you what percentage.
Inspires Others - Whenever possible, do you look to support environmentally responsible businesses? If you don't know if the companies and businesses that you are supporting are 'greening' their operations, consider asking them to create an Eco-Profile so that you and other consumers can see what they do environmentally.
I may boycott a company that has terrible practices brought to my attention, but this isn't a topic I know enough about.
Energy Audit - Have you had an energy audit within the past 24 months to help ensure maximum efficiency in energy usage throughout our home?
This is a common practice where I live--we also clean/replace our AC vents more frequently than average to promote efficiency.
Giving - Do you donate and/or volunteer to help society and/or the environment?
I volunteer for an organization that supports art and am on a committee that raises money for Cancer research; I donate items to Salvation Army and Goodwill and give money to NPR, and an organization that helps to Save the Manatee as well as a few organizations that promote wildlife preservation in the Everglades.
